Description

Getting Students to Ask Good Questions in the Middle School Math Classroom

Led by: Jesse Markowitz and David Clager

The process of learning is a process of questioning. Too often, the questions that students answer in the classroom are those generated by the teacher. Student motivation, engagement, and understanding increase dramatically when students answer questions they have developed for themselves. How do we get students to develop their own lines of inquiry?

This workshop is geared toward middle school Math teachers and will explore the Question Formulation Technique (QFT), developed by the Right Question Institute. The QFT teaches students to write and pursue their own directed, meaningful questions. Workshop participants will learn by learning the QFT for themselves and apply it to Math content. Together we will practice the method and consider a range of adaptations for your classroom. By giving students the opportunity to follow their own curiosity instead of a prescribed series of steps, we ensure their learning is authentic and highly motivated. The techniques and strategies we will use are broadly applicable to any content area and all teachers are welcome!

A free pizza lunch for all at 1PM!

Note: Please sign up for ONLY 1 workshop on this date not both; As these both workshops are 3 hours and run simultaneously from 10am to 1pm in separate rooms at Teachers College.

WHITEBOARDS & T-SHIRTS

Whiteboards are currently out of stock. We will post a notice on our website and in Eventbrite when we have more to sell – probably within the next 2-3 months. If someone with a car would volunteer to devote several hours to helping us get whiteboards, it would be a big help. You can volunteer by sending an email to info@STEMteachers.org.

You can still buy T-shirts at the workshop, but you must have the exact amount of cash ( $10 each).

PHOTOGRAPHS AND VIDEO RECORDINGS.

We take photographs and record video of our workshops in order to publicize a positive image of science teaching, and of STEMteachersNYC - a recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. If you register, you are agreeing to be photographed and to have your voice and image video-recorded. You are also agreeing to relinquish all your rights to the photographs and video recordings.

If you do not wish to be photographed or video-recorded, you must inform us when you check in at the beginning of the workshop. We will take one photograph of your face so that we can erase your image if we happen to catch it by chance during the workshop, and we will do our best to avoid you. We would also appreciate your cooperation in positioning yourself at the edge of the group so as to help us avoid you.
