Getting Started with Honey Bees

Meets 3 Saturdays: March, May, July

 

Day-long classroom instruction for new beekeepers on March 4

PLUS hands-on Field Days May 13 & July 8 

Enrollment is limited to 24. Course fee includes a one-year membership to The Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild, textbook, and lunch on March 4th

Saturday, March 4, 2017 Part 1 
Six+ hours in the classroom.  Learn from a group of experienced urban beekeepers:

  • Basic bee biology
  • Considerations about equipment, hive set-up, and location
  • Where to obtain your first bees & how to install them in the hive
  • "Langstronth hive" management through the seasons (with a focus on the spring of your 1st year)

Saturday, May 13, 2017, Part 2
Three hours in the classroom / three hours hands-on in an apiary

  • How to recognize common pests & disease
  • Integrated pest management / Natural beekeeping approaches
  • Intro to top-bar hives 

Suit up for a look at what’s going on in the hive.  Conduct an inspection with an experienced beekeeper either at St. James School or the Guild Apiary at Awbury Arboretum.  

 Saturday, July 8, 2017, Part 3

Three hours in the classroom / three hours hands-on in an apiary

  • "Reading" the frames and making management decisions 
  • Splitting, Combining, Replacing Queens & Nucleus hives
  • Winterizing your hives

Suit up for a look at what’s going on in several hives.   At either St. James School or the Guild Apiary at Awbury Arboretum, we will observe an inspection conducted by the Dept. of Agriculture inspector.
