Event description

Description

In this class we'll look at human skills for working with change, focusing on two powerful ideas: adaptive leadership and immunity to change. Each of them offers a valuable lesson on how humans respond to change: why we often apply solutions that don't work, and why we don't change even when we say we want to. We'll look at how these tools can be put to use every day to make technology delivery better, faster, and more human.

Class goals:

  • Introduce Ronald Heifetz' "adaptive leadership" framework, including technical challenges, adaptive challenges, and why they need to be addressed differently. We'll also look at how leaders without authority can effectively manage adaptive change.
  • Introduce Kegan and Lahey's "immunity to change" paradigm, including why we don't make the changes we say we want to make, and what to do about it.
  • Do a preliminary investigation of how adaptive challenges and immunity to change operate in your work environment, and what strategies you can deploy to address them.
  • Develop a practical plan for managing change on your initiatives in your environment.
