Event description

Description

Two top professionals empower you to write despite social media, pressure to write more and faster, and other traps. Valerie Parv talks about what you can control, free-writing to de-stress & other innovative ways to make the writing process joyful again. Linda Tate, Valerie’s agent/manager, deals with your support team, manager-time versus maker-time, being creative in spite of friends and family, how not to multi-task. And much, much more.

Valerie and Linda have conducted workshops and presented and chatted on topics including the Author and the Agent. This is a newly designed workshop

Surprising areas of expertise: Valerie is one of the country’s leading writing mentors (the Queen even gave her a medal for it) and Linda is principal of The Tate Gallery Pty Ltd, a people gallery of writers, sports people, TV and other professionals.

About the Expert

Valerie Parv AM was made a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours List for significant service to the arts as a prolific author, role model and mentor. An Australian Society of Authors Medal recipient, Valerie is one of Australia’s most successful authors with more than 34 million copies sold, translated into 29 languages and available as ebooks. Valerie holds a master of arts from Queensland University of Technology and is the only Australian author to receive a Pioneer Award from RT Book Reviews, New York. Valerie mentors new writers through the Valerie Parv Award created in her honour by Romance Writers of Australia. She is also a in-demand presenter of masterclasses and popular speaker nationally and internationally. Valerie is on Twitter @ValerieParv, Facebook and www.valerieparv.com

Linda Tate's agency, The Tate Gallery Pty Ltd, is known as a “people gallery” because she has represented a galaxy of sports celebrities, media people, actors and writers. Preferring to work behind the scenes, she negotiates book deals, speaking engagements and media appearances for her clients, maintains their professional diaries and offers practical advice and moral support. A former manager with Harry M. Miller’s company, her gallery of writers includes Valerie Parv AM, client for over 20 years. Linda’s maxim was inspired by Calvin Coolidge:“Talent won’t conquer all, it’s persistence and determination which counts at the end of the day"

About the venue

Harry Hartog Booksellers' ANU store, 153-11 University Avenue:

https://services.anu.edu.au/files/guidance/ANU%20Campus%20Map%202019.pdf

This Harry Hartog ANU store is located just beside the Kambri Precinct. Please just be aware that it is a very new building, and will not show up very accurately on Google Maps. Please refer to the map in the link above to help you find your way. The Harry Hartog ANU phone number is: 0477091650.

There are an array of cafes serving coffee and lunch options close by, and they are all open on Saturdays (tea, coffee, hot water, milk and biscuits are provided by the ACTWC.) The Harry Hartog team are happy to have you place some food in their fridge, and use their microwave, should you wish to bring your lunch.

Toilets are located just outside the Harry Hartog store, just a few metres away in the Kambri building.

The closest parking to the store is an underground carpark directly below Harry Hartog (with stairs or public lift access to ground level. Staff at Harry Hartog can provide swipe-pass lift access from ground level to the upper level of their store, where the workshop will be held.) Due to the newness of the precinct, this car park isn't clearly marked in maps. To find it, drive down Kingsley Street (off Barry Drive) and follow signage to the Drill Hall Gallery/Drill Hall Gallery parking. Follow Kingsley Street straight down to its culmination in an underground carpark and you will have the correct one. We recommend this parking option for people who cannot or do not wish to cover much ground to the workshop venue. It costs $5 for the whole day on a Saturday. Parking at Llewellyn Hall is a short stroll away.
