Description

Getting - and Keeping - Your Organization’s Financial House in Order

Co-hosted by the NJ Historic Trust, NJ Historical Commission, and Friends of New Jersey Heritage, this two-part workshop series will give you the tools to evaluate your organization’s current financial health and will present strategies to improve and sustain fiscal health in the future.

Both staff and volunteers are encouraged to attend, whether you have no financial background or have been working with numbers for years.

Nancy Hall of 501(c) Solutions will lead the workshops. Ms. Hall has over thirty years of experience in providing management and financial services for nonprofit organizations. Her diverse portfolio of clients includes both small and large scale organizations, providing financial and accounting oversight, and strategic planning and execution consulting services. She is adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University, where she teaches graduate level courses in nonprofit management and finance.

Workshop 1 – Financial Reporting Basics - Audits, 990’s, and State reporting requirements

Every nonprofit has to file a 990 of some type with the IRS, but not every organization has to have an audit. This session will help you identify your organization’s reporting obligations and provide a checklist to ensure that your organization is compliant with state and federal requirements.

Topics will include:

  • Audits - should you have one, what internal records are required to have an audit, how to pick an auditor, and how to read an audit.

  • 990 Filing - which form should you file (vs. which form you are required to file), what information you need, and the board’s responsibility.

  • New Jersey reporting requirements - what you need to do, what you might want to do, and if you are required to register in other states.

Additionally, the session will help you verify if you are currently in compliance with all reporting. If your organization is in compliance, great; if your organization needs to fix some things, remedies will be discussed.

The training will end with examples of using information from audits and 990’s to do future planning.

Workshop 2 – Budgeting Basics

In the book Alice in Wonderland, the Cheshire Cat said, “If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there.” Budgets are the maps that get your organization on the right road to where you want to be in the future.

This session will:

  • Identify different types of budgets – annual operating budgets, capital budgets, program budgets, and grant/contract budgets.

  • Discuss philosophies of budgeting and how to reach consensus in the budgeting process.

  • Provide tools such as worksheet formats, rules for estimating expenses, and options for presenting the budget to staff, boards, and funders.

Cost: $20 per person, per workshop

It is recommended, but not required, to attend both workshops.
