Event description

Description

Ko Kret is an artificial island located about 20 kilometers north of Bangkok. It is filled with unique finds, which visitors can explore on foot or they can rent a bicycle or boat. The island is frequented mostly by locals, and you will be hard-pressed to find other tourists on the island. Most of the inhabitants on the island come from Mon descent, a civilization that originated from lower Myanmar. Many left the country in 1757 to head to Thailand after they were facing turmoil in their region. Visitors have the option of stopping by the Mon Cultural Center or a free museum on the island to learn more about Mon culture.

The island is teeming with temples, and one of the most noteworthy of them all is Wat Poramaiyikawat Worawihan. The temple is most notably seen on the boat ride in, sitting on the banks of the murky river. It’s most striking feature is the Slant Chedi, otherwise known as Phra Chedi Mu Tao. It’s like the island’s own Leaning Tower of Pisa, but Thai style, of course. Visitors will be able to walk around the temple grounds and visit a free museum if they choose to do so. Other amazing temples include Wat Sala Kun, Wat Chim Plee Sutthawat, and more.
