What works and what doesn't when developing Relationships with Funders

Yes you can build a relationship with a funder even if you don't have personal contacts to start. We'll show you how to get to know a funder without creaing unnecessary work for yourself or the program officer. Join this session to get a sneak preview of a forthcoming report which contains the most current information about what works - and what doesn't - when contacting funder representatives. We will discuss:

  • Email versus telephone vesus mail - How you choose
  • What you say. How much is too much? 
  • How do you go from the first contact to being invited to submit a proposal (RFP)

We will look at communications preferences expressed by different types of grant-maker: private, corporate, community, and operating foundations; donor-advised fund managers; and trust officers or wealth advisors managing family foundations and family giving programs. 

Key topics include:

  • How to match your communication with the different funder types
  • Details on how to prepare for the crucial first communication and introduction of your organization
  • How to build a relationship where each step takes you towards receiving a request for a proposal, getting the grant and building a long term funding partnership

This session is geared for skill levels within development department. It will be of most use for people who contact funders and team members who complete reports or proposal management entries. It is the third webinar in our Relationship Building for Successful Fundraising Series. Each webinar in this series stands on its own and does not have any pre-requisites. You can sign up for any or all webinars you need.

Webinar Series Guest Presenter: Melissa Brown

Melissa Brown

Melissa Brown advises nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and internationally. She has worked for nearly 20 year at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, most recently as managing editor of Giving USA.

Ms. Brown presents on generational differences on giving, writing successful grant proposals, and regional and national giving statistics. Her research focuses on recent charitable contributions, state-level differences in charitable giving, and gender differences in motivations for giving.

She earned her bachelor's degree at Reed College in Portland, Oregon and a Master of Governmental Administration degree at the University of Pennsylvania. Her firm's website is She blogs at under the title "Giving Choices" and tweets as @npowriter

Shadi Mogadime

Shadi is the Senior Fundraising Consultant at Metasoft Systems Inc. She has over 25 years experience in the non-profit sector in Canada and the USA. Shadi has held senior director positions in both marketing and development; juried foundation grants; and facilitated a grant program for a major foundation.

As a consultant, she has assisted non-profit organizations with strategic planning, staff and board development, as well as mentoring a number of senior directors. Shadi has a wealth of knowledge of the non-profit sector and a track record of highly successful programs and projects from multi-million dollar capital campaigns to annual fund strategies for large, small and mid-size organizations.
