GET IN FORMATION: Anti-Anti-Beyoncé Protest Rally
Event Information
Description
When Black women affirm Blackness/Black womanhood, they are attacked and silenced.
This is a counter protest to [click this link here for info ->] a racist, ahistorical attack on the Black Panther Party and Beyonce, plus an excuse to celebrate a very awesome song and #BlackGirlMagic moment.
Sisters, dress in your "Formation" video/Super Bowl performance-inspired gear and make this a moment a joyous one! Allies and friends, show up and show your support!
We have asked our biggest stars to get political and Bey went there. Don't let anyone make her powerful statement about the value of Black life be overshadowed by those who don't believe that our lives matter.
UPDATE:
Here are some important DOs and DON'Ts for the event, as well as some answers to questions we've gotten:
-DO wear your "Formation" Super Bowl performance-inspired gear, sisters: black hats, big hair, black clothes! However, it's gonna be cold, so don't forget your winter gear.
-DO bring friends! Allies are welcome; however, if you aren't a Black girl...don't put on an Afro wig and call yourself standing in solidarity with us. That ain't it.
-DON'T lose sight of the message. We are challenging the pushback that Beyonce is facing for affirming the Black Panther Party and the anti-police violence movement. This isn't just about her.
-DO bring signs that uplift the names of people (particularly Black women and girls) killed by police violence as well as members of the Black Panther Party. Feel free to make signs with your favorite "Formation" lyrics too.
-DO use this as an opportunity to go learn about the Black Panther Party if you are unfamiliar. We will not allow this organization to be written down in history as the Black KKK. A documentary, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, will be airing on the night of 2/16 on PBS: http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/films/the-black-panthers-vanguard-of-the-revolution/
-DON'T focus on harassing folks who are out there to protest on the other side. It's not worth it. Our presence is the message.
-DO learn the words to "Formation!" http://mic.com/articles/134573/formation-lyrics-meaning-behind-beyonc-s-new-black-power-anthem#.ZJU0e53qq
We will be assembling at the corner of 51st and Park Avenue, starting at 7am. Nearby trains include the 6 (51st Street) and the E/M (53rd/Lexington.)
