About this event

This course is a workshop for clinicians who have already received FEES Training. The purpose of this course is to improve clinicians’ interpretation skills. This course will outline a FEES protocol, discuss research supporting rationale for FEES, and discuss implementation of rating scales for FEES interpretation. There will be exercises to practice verbiage for describing laryngeal abnormalities and interpretation of a variety of swallowing abnormalities with the goal of improving analysis of FEES exam and documentation of findings. This unique course is taught by skilled FEES clinicians from two different backgrounds, acute care and long term care. Participants will be expected to bring a laptop computer and headphones (earbuds are fine) and will receive a flash drive with course slides, supporting PDFs, and video examples to take home. Lunch is included on Day 1.

Instructors:

This course is taught by Beth Cormell, M.S., CCC-SLP and Selena Reece, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-S.

Beth Cormell, M.S.,CCC-SLP has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 25 years. She graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and is currently working as a clinical SLP at UNCRex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC. She initiated the FEES program at UNCRex in 1997, and since, has completed thousands of FEES. Beth not only trains all UNCRex speech staff on FEES, but has also been instrumental in training clinicians and implementing new FEES program throughout the country. She has taught FEES courses for more than 18 years, has presented short courses on FEES implementation and application at NCSHLA’s Annual Convention and at the ASHA Convention. She has been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES by a board certified Otolaryngologist

Selena Reece received her Master’s degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003 and became a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing in 2015. She has worked in acute care, outpatient, and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She currently serves as the Director of Educational Resources for Carolina Speech Pathology, while carrying an active caseload providing mobile FEES services. Selena has been training clinicians on FEES throughout the U.S. since 2012. She was featured on Swallow Your Pride Podcast, Episode 18 and has presented at state and national conferences. Selena serves as a mentor through the American Board of Swallowig and Swallowng Disorders. She has been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES by a board certified Otolaryngologist.

Successful participation in this course includes 100% attendance.
