Description

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as the Global Goals, are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. This interactive program allows participants to understand how they can take part in making impact towards the SDGs locally.

Format:

  • Interactive introduction to the SDGs
  • Local success stories
  • How can you get engaged?

Participating local organizations:

  • Kanu Hawaii works to provide tools and opportunities for people to connect with one another, to take action that builds more compassionate and resilient communities across Hawaii. This April, Kanu is supporting Volunteer Week Hawaii, our state’s celebration of National Volunteer Week, with a focus on cultivating aloha and perpetuating island values through service. In 2019, Volunteer Week Hawaii will embrace the 17 UN SDGs as a means to frame the global impact of our local action. Kanu sees immense value in informing our organizations and communities about the SDGs and adopting them at a local level.
  • Joshua Cooper is Executive Director of Hawai'i Institute for Human Rights and lecturer at the University of Hawai'i. Cooper participated in the negotiations of the UN SDGs from the Rio+20 Earth Summit to the adoption at the UN General Assembly in 2015. Cooper continues to participate to achieve the 2030 Agenda through assisting Indigenous Peoples and Small Islands States with the Voluntary National Reviews at the UN High Level Political Forums annually and currently creating campaigns around Voluntary Local Reviews.

Together, we work to ensure that no one in our Hawaii ʻohana goes hungry.

  • Junior Chamber International Hawaii is a global organization with a local chapter in Hawaii. As a whole, Junior Chamber International follows the UN SDGs in how they create their projects. Their partnership with the UN extends to the inclusion of the UN logo in the JCI logo.

Each organization will give a LIGHTENING QUICK pitch answering the following questions:

  • What do you do? Give us some context using the SDGs.
  • What impact are you most proud of?
  • Who do you serve?
  • How can we help?

Following the pitches, participants can opt into small group conversations to engage more deeply.
