Event description

Description

Directed by Margarethe von Trotta. Written by Margarethe von Trotta and Pamela Katz.

Germany/Luxembourg/France/Israel, 2012, 113 min., in German, English, and Hebrew with English subtitles.

An introduction to the film will be provided by Dr. Hester Baer from the University of Maryland, College Park. A discussion will follow the screening.

After being caught in South America and extradited to Israel, one of the most infamous war criminals of the 20th century is brought to trial. When a German-Jewish writer living in New York volunteers to report on the proceedings, her surprising coverage shocks the world and jeopardizes all of her relationships.

Hannah Arendt is assigned to cover the trial of brutal Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann. She anticipates a confrontation with a monster. Instead, however, she encounters an unremarkable and banal bureaucrat. Hannah Arendt, a biographical film, is a thoughtful portrait of a courageous and determined woman who challenges the public’s perception of evil. Arendt (1906-1975) was a philosopher and journalist who reported on the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem between 1960 and 1964. A dynamically-narrated portrait of one of the 20th century’s most exceptional intellectuals, the film also offers a striking portrayal of the New York milieu of German-Jewish emigrants at the beginning of the 1960s.

Admission to the film is $5 through Eventbrite. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the event.
