HISTORY OF GERMAN AMERICAN DAY:

German-American Day is a holiday in the U.S. observed annually on Oct. 6th (the 2017 celebration of the Teutonic Council of Savannah will be on Sunday Oct. 8th) It celebrates German-American heritage and commemorates the date in 1683 when 13 German families landed in Philadelphia and founded Germantown, Pennsylvania, the first German settlement in the original 13 American colonies. The custom died out during WWI but was revived under President Reagan and approved by Congress in 1987.
