About this event

Join us for GEOSTRATA Extra - where you get an in-depth conversation with a GEOSTRATA author from the magazine's current issue!

The August/September Extra will be a conversation between Editor Ken Fishman and author Kevin Briggs about his piece in GEOSTRATA titled "Assessing the Deterioration of Aging Infrastructure Earthworks: The Achilles Heel in Long, Linear Transport Networks". To read Kevin's article, visit

Kevin Briggs is a Chartered Engineer and HS2 Ltd/RAEng Senior Research Fellow in Geotechnical Engineering (2020-2025).

His research is being used to assess the ageing and degradation of infrastructure earthworks (embankments & cuttings) supporting the railway and highway networks. This includes field and laboratory investigations into the properties and behavior of natural soils and engineered fills.

Kevin was awarded a RAEng Industrial Fellowship in ‘Railway Infrastructure Resilience’ (2017/18) and the EPSRC Doctoral Prize in (2011). He is currently Bath PI for the £4.8M EPSRC ACHILLES Programme (2018-2022) led by Newcastle University. ACHILLES will examine how to better monitor and maintain UK infrastructure earthworks, to save money and reduce transport disruptions.

Kevin is a member of the British Geotechnical Association (BGA) Executive Committee.
