The GIFT Festival is an annual celebration bringing the best of the visiting arts in Tbilisi, as well as leading our country’s unique cultural profile internationally. Our festival hosted more than 300 international visiting groups and companies and yet remains as one of the major platform for international exchange and cooperation. In 1997 it was founded by the its International Board of Directors of Edinburgh, Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth International Arts Festivals and up to date being supported by Peter Brook, Sasha Waltz, Vanessa Redrgave, Michael kahn, Thelma Holt and others.
Since its inception the Gift Festival program was selected and presented by the international board of directors including luminaries of the arts and culture, so as the grand developers and entrepreneurs from around the world. Therefore the quality of our product has not only engaged young Georgian generation to enhance their professional skills or knowledge, but it has challenged their ambition to get involved into the competitive and international arts arena. By considering the gap between Georgia and the wider world in the last few decades due to the social or political peripeteias, each undertaking of international collaboration (coproduction projects) hosted by the GIFT Festival namely with avant-garde artists like Mikhail Marmarinos (Greece), Andriy Zholdak (Ukraine-Germany) and others has been regarded as groundbreaking. Such development made a great educational and aesthetic influence on the Georgian audience provoking their demand for excellent work that stimulated our pursuit as of the festival, and generally as of Georgian artists and creators. Hence the strategy design of our festival has been initially set on strengthening the relationship with artists and producers from around the world though various international co-productions or initiatives, enabling young creators to represent their artistic potent. By hosting residency for the theatre directors the Gift Festival increased interest not only of actors but also of the directors to compare and implement various teachings and new practices in their work.
The massive input into the process of advancement the artistic excellence has undoubtedly been made by series of workshops and master classes hosted by the Gift festival not only during the festival but throughout the year in between at Tumanishvili Film Actors Theatre, the host theatre of the Gift Festival.
In 2017/2018 season the Gift Festival with a legitimate and useful purpose devotes itself unreservedly to build serious commitment to challenging, focused work which will definitely encourage the new associations escalating the obvious need to enlarge the scope of international relations and develop new connections.
