The Indiana Remembrance Coalition invites you to a memorial service and tombstone dedication for George Tompkins.

About this event

He was lynched in Indianapolis on March 16, 1922. He was just 19 years old. The crime was quickly covered up. No one was brought to justice. His grave didn’t even get a headstone.

Join civic and spiritual leaders as we acknowledge the local history of racial injustice, honor the life of Mr. Tompkins, and promote reconciliation and healing in our community.

Speakers to include:

  • Dr. Paul Mullins, IUPUI expert on the Tompkins lynching
  • Rev. Dr. Clyde Posley, senior pastor, Antioch Baptist Church, and chairman, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police General Orders Board

When: March 12, 2022, 11 a.m.-12:15 p.m. (Please allow extra time for your trip. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and coffee will be served.)

Where: Flanner Buchanan - Floral Park Cemetery, 425 N. Holt Rd., Indianapolis 46222.

Note: This service will begin in the Flanner Buchanan Funeral Home. However, a brief portion of this event will take place outdoors, by George Tompkins' grave. Please dress comfortably for the weather.
