Event description
We are pleased to announce the 2019 Geomorphic Change Detection (GCD) Workshop, which will be taught April 29th to May 3rd 2019.

About this Event

GCD Workshop Page

Overview

Join us to learn the latest version of the GCD Software, meet the GCD development team and take your data further in the first public GCD Workshop in two years. Over 3.5 days you will be taught change detection fundamentals as well a deep dive into the new features of the completely overhauled GCD 7 software.

We are also offering an optional 1 day, pre-workshop crash course in Topographic Surveying to Support Change Detection.

Even if you've taken previous GCD workshops, there are a ton of new time-saving features and new analytical techniques that will make this workshop much more than just a review. We welcome everyone from experienced GCD users to folks interested in repeat topographic monitoring but who have never done it (recommend 1 day pre-workshop for newbies).

Participants are encouraged to bring their own topographic data if you have it. Project-based sessions are scheduled during which the instruction team will be available to answer questions and help take your GCD use to the next level. Example datasets will be provided for new GCD users.

Learning Outcomes

  • A comprehensive overview of the theory underpinning geomorphic change detection.
  • The fundamental background necessary to design effective repeat topographic monitoring campaigns and distinguish geomorphic changes from noise (with particular focus on restoration applications).
  • Methods for interpreting and segregating morphological sediment budgets quantitatively in terms of both geomorphic processes and changes in physical habitat
  • Hands-on instruction on use of the new GCD 7 software through group-led and self-paced exercises.
  • An opportunity to interact with experts on geomorphic monitoring and the GCD software developers during sessions where you we can help you with your own data.

We cap enrollment at 35 participants, so register early (note only 20 slots are available for pre-workshop Topographic Surveying to Support Change Detection workshop). The workshop is offered through Utah State University, and participants will receive 1.5 continuing education unit credits. Those credits can count towards elective credit in our graduate certificates in GIS or Restoration. This workshop is offered through the Department of Watershed Sciences, and co-sponsored by the Restoration Consortium and Geospatial Consortium at Utah State University.

Come join us in the mountains around Logan, Utah for a hands-on experience. Easy flights are available to Salt Lake City, which is about 1.5 hours away and also accessible by shuttle that can take you door to door from the airport to your hotel in Logan.

First 15 to register before February 28, can save $300 off 4-day registration with promotional code ` earlybirdgcd`
