About the event

The 1st Geomatics Expo is intended to offer an international platform for different stakeholders to exchange ideas, showcase their innovations and motivate policy makers to create the enabling environment for economic development and human posterity. The advancement of geospatial and communication technologies is primarily driven by the private sector and operates at global scale while policies and economic development agenda are driven by governments at the national and regional levels. In this drive, the private sector is motivated by the need for growth, market competition and technology innovation. On the other hand, government policy andeconomic development agenda are influenced by different considerations ranging from security, provision of social services and equitable distribution of wealth. The last 15 years has witnessed astronomical evolution and convergence of geospatial technology with a variety of communication technologies. What used to be considered discrete, even esoteric, technologies such as GIS, Earth Observation, GNSS, mobile services and navigation systems are no longer considered discrete. Now they are a family capable of “talking to one another” and interoperate freely in a virtual communications environment of wireless broadband, portable cell phone/computers, World Wide Web and Cloud computing in the dynamically evolving platforms. The theme of the conference, “Multilevel Approach to Geospatial Technology, Policy And Economic Development” is aimed at strengthening collaboration between stakeholders from the private and public sectors for the development of the industry. The Expo will therefore help policy makers, academia, professionals, researchers and global industry leaders to share their experiences in the Geomatics domain and discover the emerging trends and technologies in the sector.

Objectives
The Uganda Vision 2040 articulates clear strategies and policy directions to transform the country into a competitive upper middle income country with per capita income of USD 9,500. This requires average real GDP to grow at the rate of 8.2 per cent per annum translating into total GDP of about USD 580.5bn from USD17bn in 2010. This is a long term development plan built from lessons learnt and analysis of the country’s past development strategies including Vision 2025 and Draft Vision 2035. For it to be achieved, the emerging development prospects including the discovery of oil and gas reserves, green economy, demographic profile, E-revolution, globalization and regional economic integration among others, as well as associated challenges have to be planned and integrated with the revolving Geospatial Technologies. The objectives of this year’s Expo are therefore to provide:

• Forum for knowledge sharing aimed at bringing people, ideas and innovations together to transform the geomatics industry

• Opportunity to meet and network with industry leaders, researchers, and policy makers from public and private sectors who lend the vision and future direction to the industry

• Platform for technology leaders to showcase, inspire, inform and educate users on latest innovation and trends in the field of Geomatics.

• Place to network, collaborate and share user experiences in a wide of applications as well as forge new inter-agency partnerships to further organization’s effectiveness, efficiency and performance
