2019 Alumni Field Trip

7:30 AM to 6:30 PM Sat, Oct 19

Meet at BYU Museum of Paleontology.

Destination: Traverse Mountain Landslide and Little Cottonwood Canyon

Geology is dynamic and this year’s alumni field trip is earth-shattering. The trip is led by Drs. Jeff Keith, Eric Christiansen, and Ron Harris but stars a 57 km2 landslide – the entire East Traverse Mountain Range! It has long been interpreted as a fault-block range. However, it puzzled geologists because the 8.5-mile long mountain range it is fractured into sand- and gravel-sized clasts. The puzzle was solved by your trip leaders and a dozen mentored geology students. The East Traverse Range began as Paleozoic rocks overlying the Little Cottonwood Stock but 6.5 million-years-ago it slid 16 km in a matter of minutes to its current location.

The trip begins at 8 am at the BYU Museum of Paleontology (meet 30 minutes early). The first stop is the Point-of-the-Mountain to view the landslide, hits the temple granite quarry in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and wraps up with a one-mile hike to Secret Lake to view the source of the dike, marble, and limestone fragments that now make up the East Traverse Mountains.
