Geoengineering - Technologies to Reverse Global Warming

The concept of geoengineering proposes to deliberately manipulate the Earth’s climate to counteract the effects of global warming from greenhouse gas emissions. The study of geoengineering is a complex discipline requiring the collation of scientific disciplines, such as atmospheric chemistry, plant biology, and meteorology, engineering disciplines, including aeronautical engineering and ballistics, and management disciplines, such as risk management, operations research, and cost/benefit analysis.
This presentation will discuss several projects using identified geoengineering strategies – carbon sequestration, Artic geoengineering, and solar radiation management – aimed at determining large scale feasibility.
Gregory Benford, Ph.D is Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, San Diego in 1967. He is distinguished as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, a Woodrow Wilson Fellow, consultant for NASA, winner of the United Nations Medal for Literature, was Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University, and the 1995 Lord Prize for contributions to science. A Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the World Academy of Arts and Sciences, he continues his research in both astrophysics and plasma physics. Teaching areas include general properties of strong turbulence and radiation, both in experiment and theory.
Astrophysical applications of these fundamental areas are also of interest, such as the brilliant radio features (arcs, filaments, threads) recently found at our own galactic center, and their possible links with hypothesized black holes there. Recognized worldwide as one of the finest authors of "hard" science fiction, Professor Benford has published over twenty books, mostly novels, of which nearly all remain in print, some after a quarter of a century. A two-time winner of the Nebula Award, Dr. Benford has also won the John W. Campbell Award, the Australian Ditmar Award, and the 1990 United Nations Medal in Literature.
