Event Details

The National Geospatial Technology Center, Jefferson Community and Technical College, and the Kentucky Information Technology Center (KITCenter) in Partnership with Kentucky Geographic Alliance and University of Kentucky Tracy Farmer Institute for Sustainability and the Environment and advice from the Kentucky Division of Geographic Information, is proud to announce a regional one day conference to be held Wednesday, June 23, 2010 with pre-conference workshops scheduled for Monday, June 21 and Tuesday, June 22 on the Southwest campus of Jefferson Community and Technical College in Louisville, Kentucky. 

This second annual conference provides a regional and Kentucky perspective of geospatial education in the P-16 segment. Presentations by leaders and practitioners in the field will provide participants with an up-to-date view.

 

Plenary sessions and professional development tracks include the following topics:

-Educational initiatives in GIS, remote sensing and other geospatial fields

-What’s the outlook for P-16 geospatial careers in Kentucky and the region

-Current software development and applications for geospatial education

The following Geospatial pre-conference workshops will be held Monday, June 21st through Tuesday, June 22nd. To register for a workshop, click on the workshop name and it will open the registration page for that workshop event. 

 

Remote Sensing and GIS for the Green Decade – Instructor, Demetrio Zourarakis - June 21st (1 day)

CLOSED - Introduction to GIS – Instructor, Mike Rudibaugh - June 21st - June 22nd (2 days)

Intermediate GIS – Instructor, Vince DiNoto - June 21st- June 22nd (2 days)

Using a GPS Across the Curriculum – Instructor, Ross Allen - June 22nd (9:00 am-12:00 pm) (1/2 day)

GeoCaching - Instructor, Ross Allen - June 22nd (1:00 pm - 4:00 pm) (1/2 day)

All conference events and pre-conference workshops will be held on the Southwest campus of Jefferson Community and Technical College, approximately 9 miles from Louisville International Airport.

The GeoTech Center hopes to increase the number, diversity, and quality of geospatial professionals through geospatial technology education at the community and technical college level.  Transforming the preparation and continuing education of geospatial technicians to meet the national workforce demand will be done by:  

 

  • Creating a national clearinghouse of exemplary geospatial curriculum materials and database Web services; 
  • Increasing the quantity, quality and diversity of geospatial technicians to meet U.S. workforce needs;
  • Increasing the number of educators participating in geospatial professional development;
  • Sustaining the Center long-term by seeking collaborations and sources of funding to maintain and improve services and products.

MORE GREAT NEWS!!!!!!! If you are an educator, you may qualify to receive a $75 stipend to attend the conference OR….$150 to attend both the conference and pre-conference workshop. There is a limited availability of stipends for this event. Preference will be given to those educators who will teach GIS in the Fall or Spring semester.

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!! We are extremely excited to announce that Mr. David DiBiase will be the keynote speaker for the conference. Mr. DiBiase is lead faculty member and manager of the Penn State Online GIS Certificate and Masters degree programs. On behalf of the NSF National Geospatial Technology Center of Excellence, he is now working with the U.S. Department of Labor to complete its Geospatial Technology Competency Model. As chairperson of the UCGIS Education Committee from 2004-2006, he led the effort to complete the GIS&T Body of Knowledge. And from 1998-2003, as a member of URISA’s Certification Committee, Mr. DiBiase helped design the criteria by which the GIS Certification Institute has awarded its “GIS Professional” credential to nearly 5,000 practitioners. He is currently a member of the URISA and GISCI Boards of Directors.
