In the Hatha classes we always start by connecting to our breath. It is said that if you can breathe then you can do yoga. Breath awareness is in fact, the most important part of the practice. Yoga is known to have a positive effect on the nervous system, but even just utilising the breath correctly without adding postures into the mix can help to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, calming the body’s ‘fight-flight’ response. I feel that being able to breathe with awareness is an invaluable tool that can be of benefit to us all in our day-to-day lives.
