Event description

Description

Genspace is proud to announce our Brooklyn Barcoding Program, an initiative that provides much-needed science outreach and STEAM education to the New York area. A key component of our new Brooklyn Barcoding Program is a Genomics Lecture and Workshop series, which is intended to introduce audiences to contemporary issues in genomic research.

We are excited to welcome Christine Marizzi as the first lecturer in the series.

Christine Marizzi, PhD is the Manager of the Urban Barcode Project and an educator at the DNA Learning Center at Cold Spring Harbor Labratory. The Urban Barcode Project, provides high school student research teams access to the equipment and tools needed for DNA barcoding, to explore biodiversity in the NYC metropolitan area.

Christine Marizzi grew up in the southern part of Austria, surrounded by beautiful glass-clear lakes and rivers and incredible mountainous ridges, routinely collecting plants for her herbarium and studying their anatomy by drawing detailed pastels. The compelling logic of genetics sparked her interest, leading her to several years in laboratory research. After graduating from the University of Vienna with a Ph.D. thesis in genetics, the interaction with students had already become a fulfilling aspect of her experience in science. As an educator at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's DNA Learning Center, Christine teaches comprehensive and well-illustrated courses in genetics and cell biology.
