Event description
Conflict over natural resources is an increasing problem. Come to hear about the work of organizations working to prevent them.

About this Event

Conflicts over natural resources are disagreements and disputes over access to, and control and use of, natural resources. They can arise for a variety of reasons, especially if user groups are excluded from participating in natural resource management. These conflicts will probably always exist to some degree in every community, but can often be managed and resolved.

Three organizations will come together to discuss the issue of prevention of conflict over natural resources, using concrete examples from the Sahel and other regions of the world. The event will propose at least two approaches for conflict prevention, resolution and mediation that will bring forward concrete examples within Global perspectives on peacebuilding.

The Réseau Bilital Maroobé (RBM), with its local grounding in the Sahel region, bringing the point of view of local civil society organizations and breeders' and herders' associations to the debate and the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) with its proven global experience in mediation through dialogue and diplomacy, sometimes in very tense contexts, bringing a complementary, more international point of view. FAO will also propose to the participants an array of experiences in conflict prevention, specifically over natural resources, from an equally international viewpoint with local grounding.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is the UN’s foremost technical institution working to prevent conflict over natural resources using a combination of capacity development, partnerships, policy support, globally accepted voluntary guidelines, and strategic deployment of technical staff.

The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) is a Swiss-based private diplomacy organisation working to prevent, mitigate and resolve armed conflicts through dialogue and mediation. The organisation is currently involved in more than 40 dialogue and mediation initiatives in over 25 countries.

The Réseau Bilital Maroobé (RBM) is a network of over 80 African breeders and Herders organizations operating for over 750 000 members in nine countries from the extended Sahel region.

Under the guidance of a Member State Representative (tbc), the three organizations will discuss the general topic of prevention of conflict over natural resources and more specifically issues surrounding agro-pastoralism in the Sahel region.
