Event description

Description

The Southern Maryland Meats program of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) is partnering with the University of Maryland Extension (UME) to offer a series of workshops on beef genetics, estrus synchronization and artificial insemination (AI). Both workshops will be held at Zekiah Farms, 5235 Bryantown Road, Waldorf, Maryland on Saturday, March 24 and Saturday, April 7, beginning at 10 a.m.

IMPORTANT: It is imperative for any producer who wants to enroll in the elective group breeding series to immediately separate their breeding stock from their bulls in anticipation of hormonal synchronization for May/early June breeding in order to maximize successful outcomes. While SMM cannot guarantee success rates, every effort will be made to achieve the highest levels of impregnation. Producers who register for the series will receive a survey developed to assess their goals and needs so that these workshops can be made as useful as possible to various producer operations.

These workshops are developed specifically for regional beef producers in order to enhance the livestock genetic base in Southern Maryland, increase potential for productivity and improve the quality of meat products sold in the region. Topics include essential genetic and reproductive education for increased pregnancy success rates and quality meat production, as well as hands-on body condition scoring and chute-side protocols demonstrations.

As an added value to the workshops, farmers will have the opportunity to join a mutually coordinated synchronized ‘group’ breeding season, led by University of Maryland Extension Educator Jeff Semler, and benefit from a professionally administered AI service from a leading genetic company.

Participants that enroll in and complete the breeding program series will be reimbursed up to $500 per farm for the cost of:

  • Semen/Genetics
  • Arm Service Costs
  • Hormone (CIDR, prostaglandins, and/or gonadotropin)
  • Squeeze Chute Rental

Genetics and AI Workshops are available to all Southern Maryland Beef producers. Registration fees of $60 per person, per workshop include a catered lunch (limit two representatives per producer). Registration must be received by March 19, 2018.

The Agendas for the two Workshops are as follows:

March 24th - 10 am to 3 pm

  • Goal Setting -- If you don't know where you are headed any road will get you there. In this session, your breeding goals will be evaluated in order to plan for the rest of the Program
  • Beef Genetics 101 -- Genetic defects and expected progeny difference (EPD). What they are, and what do they mean?
  • Reproduction and the Controlled Breeding Season. Not all bulls are created equal. We will learn to compare them and manage them.
  • Next Steps

April 7th - 10 am to 3 pm

  • Estrus Synchronization Protocols. Estrous Synchronization programs allow beef producers to improve the rate of pregnancy production during the breeding season through increased submission rates. Protocols involve MGS, CIDR, prostaglandins and/or gonadotropin-releasing hormone.
  • AI Programs. Artificial Insemination has the potential to increase cash crop uniformity and weaning weight, reduce birth weight and calving difficulty, shortening the calving season.
  • Buy-in and what it is going to take to be successful.
  • Body Conditioning Scoring (BCS) and Chute-side protocols. BCS describes the relative fatness or body condition of a cow herd through the use of a nine-point scale.

Subsequent On-Farm AI (Elective)

  • Hormone protocols -- Administration and Date To Be Determined on April 7
  • Arm Services -- Date to be Determined on April 7

Applications to participate in the Genetics and AI Workshops must be received by March 19, 2018. After you have registered, please fill out the survey questions about your interests and needs so that these workshops can be made as useful as possible to your operations.
