Event Details

For decades, the tools of biotechnology and DNA analysis have been difficult to implement in classrooms. The miniPCR DNA Discovery System is an innovative biotechnology teaching toolkit that closes this gap. In this hands-on workshop we will develop skills to bring the cutting edge of biology and space exploration into your classroom.

miniPCR and partners have created Genes in Space, a free science competition where teachers and students can design DNA research proposals for space. Winners have their experiments launched to the International Space Station and become involved in real-world space biology research. Join us and learn how to participate in Genes in Space, immerse yourself in real-world uses of biotechnology in agriculture, forensics, and medical sciences, and develop skills to implement hands-on biotechnology with your students. We'll also share how to obtain free loans of miniPCR "Lab in a Box" equipment and reagents.

 Workshop agenda:

Introduction to Genes in Space and miniPCR (approximately 2 hours):

  • Participants will be introduced to the Genes in Space contest and learn how to use it as a classroom activity. Participants will also learn how miniPCR’s innovative biotechnology toolkit has been utilized in classrooms, on the International Space Station, and beyond.

Hands-on biotechnology activity (approximately 3 hours):

  • Participants will use biotechnology to identify the source of foodborne illness aboard the International Space Station (detailed materials available here). Participants will get hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques including PCR, restriction enzyme digest, and gel electrophoresis.

This workshop is free to attend and lunch will be provided!
