What is a tintype?

One of the earliest photographic methods dating back to the 1850s, a tintype is a direct positive image, exposed through a wet chemical process directly onto a thin piece of metal. The large format camera and antique lens provides a romantic effect.

Question 2

Can my significant other/friend/kids/pets be in the portrait?

Accepted Answer

Of course, though we're limiting to two subjects, with maybe a small child held between parents. Some other things to keep in mind: oftentimes younger children and pets show up blurry due to the very thin focus (depth of field). The flash may also scare pets or young children.

Question 3

How long are the sessions?

Accepted Answer

It takes a total of 20-mins from start to finish. The wetplate process is a lot slower than what we are used to with digital, but the results are well worth the time and care.

Question 4

Can I get my tintype retaken?

Accepted Answer

We'll take our time because we only get one take. We can only retake the photo if there is something wrong with the exposure or the chemistry.

Question 5

Do I get to keep my tintype the day of the session?

Accepted Answer

D. Anson will develop on-site (you can watch!), then scan & finish in the studio. You'll get a digital file in 1-3 days and can pick up your plate 10-15 days after your session.

Question 6

I see your standard plate is 5x7. Can I get a different size?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Upgrade to 8x10 day-of for $125 (choose size before we shoot). Ultra Large Format up to 16x20 (starts at $1000) available by inquiry—takes extra prep but is truly stunning.

Question 7

What should I wear?

Accepted Answer

Wear what feels like you! Avoid all white/black; mid-tones & textures work best. Skip purple/pink/fuchsia lips (show white), reds (look black). Glasses often glare; ok to wear, but no retakes if glare happens. Lens removal helps!

Question 8

Can I smile?

Accepted Answer

Yes, D. Anson finds that a relaxed smile with no teeth is really nice.

Question 9

What part of me is in the photo?

Accepted Answer

Waist up, or just head and shoulders. This has to do with the lighting D. Anson is bringing.
