Generative Composition in SuperCollider - A Workshop
Learn how to create music that composes itself. This four-hour workshop introduces generative composition with SuperCollider, a free open-source environment for sound synthesis and algorithmic music. We’ll explore randomness, probability, and patterns, and you’ll build a small generative piece to take home, and will have tools to try out generative techniques in the studio or live.
We’ll focus on Patterns and event generation in SuperCollider, and learn how to connect with your favorite DAW or VST instrument. If you already use SC, you can also work with your own instruments.
Areas we will cover:
- The Pattern and Event systems in SuperCollider
- Building blocks for generative music
- Scaling complexity without getting lost
- Integrating with existing music setups
- Moving from patterns to complete pieces or performances
The workshop is open to beginner/intermediate to advanced SuperCollider users. If you can run code and make basic sounds in SuperCollider, you’ll be fine. If you’re new, reach out to Scott for starter resources.
We will prioritize slots for individuals who have been systemically or historically excluded from coding, technology, or music spaces, and strongly encourage those individuals to apply. If you cannot afford the sliding scale fee, we will try to make free spots available, please contact us.
