Event description
An Entrepreneurship Makeathon Empowering the Next Generation of Female Leaders

About this Event

Are you a natural leader? Are you inspired by the community of design, business, and tech leaders in the bay area?

Join Generation She at our second annual two-day entrepreneurship makeathon at Lyft HQ in San Francisco! Learn more at www.generationshe.co

Colleges like Stanford, Yale, UC Berkeley, MIT, Harvard, and USC are investing hundreds of millions of dollars into entrepreneurship and creativity on their campuses. The students filling these innovative programs and spaces are (unsurprisingly) mostly male. We're here to nurture the entrepreneurial spirit that colleges are looking for — and we're focused on investing in high school girls.

Attendees will learn the steps to start and run their own businesses, build up their resumes, and position themselves well to take on leadership roles in high school clubs, college organizations, and (eventually!) Fortune 500 companies!

We're reinventing the future — and you should be leading it.

Generation She is an entirely women-led nonprofit that is on a mission to close the gender gap in the entrepreneurship landscape. We want high school girls to have the confidence to take ownership of their ideas and careers as they prepare for college and beyond! Last year, our event was a smash success at Snap, Inc. HQ in Los Angeles, featuring the founders of Sugarfina and BOOMCHICKAPOP. Check it out here: http://bit.ly/GenShe-LA2019Sizzle

During this two-day event, students will actively engage in discussions with female founders (such as the founders of Health-Ade Kombucha and Urban Decay) and attend workshops in areas such as user experience design, product development, and digital marketing. Attendees can explore different career paths in tech, design, business, and everything in between.

Participants will also have the chance to pitch their products and network with a panel of accomplished female entrepreneurs and C-level industry executives (i.e. Lyft, Google, General Assembly). After the makeathon, all attendees will be able to tap into a closed community for collegiate and career mentorship. There will be grand prizes, amazing swag for every attendee (Ban.do! Maybelline! TOMS! Beauty Blender!), and delicious food/snacks. Additionally, the girls will meet like-minded peers who could eventually become the co-founder of their next club, research project, side-hustle, or full-fledged business!

If you know a high schooler who would be interested in being a brand ambassador for Generation She please have the student apply at: bit.ly/genshe-ambassador. All ambassadors will receive a 50% discount toward an early bird ticket and exclusive Gen She materials and merch.

Additionally, there are numerous scholarships available to attend for free! Please have the student apply at: http://bit.ly/genshe-scholarship.

Tickets are limited and sold on a first-come, first-serve basis:

Ticket prices cover breakfast and lunch, drinks and snacks, access to our interactive workshops/sessions taught by professionals, mentorship from female founders, entrepreneurship workbook, the Gen She community post-event, and a swag bag valued at $80+.

For more information about the makeathon please reach out to us at contact@generationshe.co or text us at 508-469-9409.

FAQs:

What sets the Gen She Makeathon apart?

Colleges like Stanford, Yale, UC Berkeley, MIT, Harvard, and USC are investing hundreds of millions of dollars into entrepreneurship and creativity on their campuses. The students filling these innovative programs and spaces are (unsurprisingly) mostly male. We're here to nurture entrepreneurial spirit within high school girls by providing a foundation for idea exploration and implementation through workshops in design, coding, marketing, and other real industry skills. We cultivate community throughout the year with exclusive access to mentorship for makeathon attendees and an online platform for girls to meet female founders, discuss solutions, and dream big with one another. There is no better way for girls to prepare for the future (senior year of high school, college, and beyond) than to harness their intellectual power and channel it into something extraordinary. Gen She encourages young women to take the leap and create their own “something.”

Do I have to come to the makeathon with an idea prepared?

Nope! The brainstorming sessions with industry leaders on the first day were made to help you with the ideation process. If this process is intimidating, don’t fret! Come to the makeathon with a list of your interests (books, movies, works of art, anything!) and from here you’ll be able to figure out what you’re truly passionate about!

Is this an overnight event?

This is not an overnight event! Check in starts at 8am everyday and sessions end on 5pm each day. On Saturday, there will be an optional networking social until 6pm. You must be picked up by a parent or legal guardian.

If I don’t attend Saturday, can I still come on Sunday?

Due to the nature of the prep work throughout our ideation activities, we will not allow girls to attend only one day of the event. Each of our work sessions build upon the one before it, and thus we require attendance at all events on both days.

Do I need to have previous entrepreneurship experience?

Absolutely not! Throughout the two days we work with you to develop the necessary and technical skills you need to not only come up with an idea but to make that idea a reality.

Do I have to be in high-school?

Exceptions for students not in high school will be made. Please reach out to us at contact@generationshe.co.

What do I need to bring to the event?

Please bring your laptop, charger, notebook, and a warm jacket!

I don’t have a ride to the event, what do I do?

Please reach out to students at your high school and try to organize a carpool. You can also take public transportation. Lyft HQ is just a couple minute walk from the San Francisco Caltrain Station! If you are 18+ you can take a Lyft ride to the event.

Is food provided?

Yes! Lunch AND breakfast are provided for the attendees. There will also be a networking hour on Saturday night with drinks and snacks!

Are scholarships available?

Yes! Generation She is sponsoring a limited number of scholarships covering the full price of the ticket. Apply here: bit.ly/genshe-scholarship.

How do I become a Generation She Ambassador and what are the benefits?

Please apply at: bit.ly/genshe-ambassador. All ambassadors will receive a 50% discount toward an early bird ticket and exclusive Gen She materials and merch.

I can't come last minute, what do I do?

Reach out to contact@generationshe.co with a friend's name and email address and we can transfer the ticket to them! Full amount will be charged and transfer deemed inapplicable if not contacted at least 72 hours before the event. There are no refunds. Again, only ticket transfers are allowed.

What’s the dress code?

Smart casual! Think, “jeans and a nice top.” Show us your personality!
