Corporate Venture Capital

Generating quality and relevant deal flow is life blood for corporate venture capitalists (CVCs). In order to do this effectively, CVCs need to do an effective job of positioning themselves and marketing their company within the venture ecosystem. In this panel, we will learn best practices from experienced CVCs on how they have been able to differentiate themselves and get into great deals.

Mark Klopp

Mark Klopp is an independent consultant and advisor on corporate venture capital and innovation. He is also a Managing Director with Coronis Medical Ventures, an accelerator and seed fund focused on medical devices. Mark is an active angel investor, co-founder and advisor for private companies and serves on the board of several charities.Mark is a former Board Member of the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) and served as Chairman and a member of the Executive Committee for the Corporate Venture Group. Formerly Managing Director of Eastman Ventures, Eastman Chemical Company's corporate venture capital arm, Mark started up and led the company's efforts to invest in and partner with private companies, providing early access to emerging technology and growth options to Eastman. He and his team forged relationships and co-investments with premier venture capitalists and corporations. Eastman invested with a top-quartile IRR track record in investing directly in 25 ventures and as an LP in 5 venture funds in areas spanning Information Technology, Life Sciences, Advanced Materials and Clean Technology.
Michael Young,
Director,
Caterpillar Ventures
Caterpillar Inc.

Mr. Young has over 30 years of professional experience with the past 13+ years at Caterpillar. He currently leads Caterpillar Ventures with a portfolio of investments focused on Energy, Electrification, Autonomy, Robotics, and Digital Solutions.

Prior to his current position, Michael led Caterpillar’s Mergers and Acquisition actives across Asia Pacific, including acquisitions, joint ventures, and divestitures. During his six years in Beijing, Caterpillar closed more than a dozen transactions, mainly focused on joint venture activities in China. He has also held positions at Caterpillar related to corporate strategy, business development, and M&A, all with a focus on driving growth.

Before joining Caterpillar in 2005, Michael was at Dell Computer for 6 years, including serving as the CFO for the China / Hong Kong business when it began operations in Xiamen China in 1998, and later leading their corporate venture capital operations in Asia, “Dell Ventures”, based out of Singapore. Before Dell, Michael held several accounting positions for Ethyl Corporation, including plant controller, divisional accounting manager, and international accounting manager.
Tony Cannestra,

Denso Ventures

Tony Cannestra is the Director of Corporate Ventures for DENSO International America (DIAM). DIAM is the U.S. subsidiary of DENSO Corporation, one of the world’s largest auto parts and systems suppliers. Mr. Cannestra joined DENSO in early 2014, and he leads DENSO’s 4 person Corporate Venture Capital Group, which is primarily responsible for identifying, and investing in, startup companies working on new technologies that are of strategic interest to DENSO’s future product roadmap. During his tenure at DENSO, Mr. Cannestra has made 16 investments and led a team that made an acquisition of a startup company. DENSO’s CVC Group focuses on investments in the areas of Autonomous Driving, Connected Vehicles, Cybersecurity, Electrification, and New Mobility. He currently serves as a Board Director for Blaize, Canatu, Dellfer, MetaWave, Quadric, and Bond Mobility, all of which are DENSO portfolio companies. Mr. Cannestra also continues to assist with DENSO’s startup M&A efforts.
Daniela Proske,
Senior Venture Principal,
BP Venture Capital America

Daniela leads investment activity in mobility for BP Ventures and sits on the boards of FreeWire Technologies, Repairpal and Zubie.
She is also representing BP Ventures in the advisory board of NREL. Before joining BP Ventures in 2018 she held a number of roles in BASF, where she started her career as business development and global key account manager in intermediates. Later she was a member of the BASF Ventures team and more recently she worked as senior manager M&A and led international transactions for various business units.
Prior to BASF, Daniela co-founded a life science company as head of finance. She has a PhD in biochemistry; Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and graduated in economics at the St. Galler Business School, Switzerland.
Stefan Heuser,
Vice President

Hyundai CRADLE
Stefan’s passion is with startups, venture capital, innovation and entrepreneurship. He is leading Hyundai CRADLE’s venture investments. Previously he was vice president of operations and innovation at Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center and built and led an early stage venture investment team for Samsung Global Innovation Center, where he was also responsible for university relations and technology scouting. Earlier in his career, Stefan led Siemens Technology to Business an innovation center in Berkeley, California, where he focused on innovation projects and venture investments. Stefan holds a master’s degree in Business Administration (Diplom Kaufmann) from Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich.
