Event Details

June 12-13, 2019, 8am-5pm (approx)

This is a 2-day classroom-based workshop held at the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Midwest Region at 5600 American Blvd West, Bloomington, MN 55437-1458, where attendees will gain hands-on experience using GenEst (A Generalized Estimator of Mortality), the recently published fatality estimation software.

The workshop will be led by Dan Dalthorp of the U.S. Geological Survey, the lead author of the software. He and other instructors will compare GenEst to currently available estimators, discuss the parameters needed for mortality estimation and optimal field methods to determine search area, search schedule, persistence patterns and efficiency of searchers. Instructors will lead discussions and activities on topics including:

             Introduction to Estimating Fatality

Hands-on Training with the GenEst Software

             Interpreting Proposals and Reports

Comparing Common and Rare Fatality Events

Registration is open to anyone who is interested in mortality estimation, such as at wind energy or solar facilities. This workshop will help individuals plan projects, implement field methods, interpret reports, and better understand wildlife and wind energy issues. Basic knowledge of mortality estimation is helpful, but a variety of topics will be covered ranging from an introduction to mortality estimation to advanced GenEst applications. Participants can work in groups or individually, inputting simulated data, or their own dataset.

Interested parties can access the software at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9O9BATL

Alternatively, an online version is available at WEST, Inc.'s Shiny.io service https://west-inc.shinyapps.io/GenEst/.

Registration is limited to 27 participants (registration fee is for venue-related costs)
