General Orders No. 9

"Coming seemingly out of nowhere... rewards repeated viewings... A true original."
- Robert Koehler, VARIETY

"Makes Malick look like a straight shot of Hollywood."
- Michael Tully, HAMMER TO NAIL

"Strikingly sincere... Persons tinges his film's surreal beauty with gentle humor."
- Karina Longworth, THE VILLAGE VOICE (June 22, 2011)

"With unforgettable intensity, Persons moves his camera like a finely made brush, tipping and fanning it through the waters, relics and landscapes of Georgia’s terrain."
- Amy R. Handler, MOVING PICTURES MAGAZINE (June 22, 2011)

GENERAL ORDERS NO. 9 is a dazzling cinematic experience that breaks from the constraints of the documentary form to contemplate the signs of loss and change in the American South. Awarded for its visionary cinematography at Slamdance, the film makes its New York theatrical premiere with a week-long run, June 24 - 30.

The stunning culmination of over eleven years' work, writer-director Robert Persons' feature debut marries experimental filmmaking with an accessible, naturalist sensibility to tell the epic story of the clash between nature and man's progress, reaching a bittersweet reconciliation all its own.

Told entirely with images, poetry and music, GENERAL ORDERS NO. 9 is unlike any film you have ever seen. A story of maps, dreams and prayers, it's one last trip down the rabbit hole before it's paved over...

72 minutes. In English. Presented in Blu-ray. Unrated. A Variance Films release.

"First-time writer-director Robert Persons establishes himself as a maverick personality... The meticulous, artisanal craftsmanship and conviction Persons brings to his thesis are difficult to dismiss."
- David Rooney, THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER (June 21, 2011)

"GENERAL ORDERS NO. 9 is a rapturous ode to Georgia and a plaint for paradise lost—for what has been paved over and polluted, poisoned by the dissonance of urban asymmetry."
- Henry Stewart, THE L MAGAZINE (June 21, 2011)

"An entirely different breed... A hymn sung at a funeral for someone you never knew when he was living, but you're sad to see him dead."
- Brian Miller, SEATTLE WEEKLY
