General Data Protection Regulation
PREPARE FOR MAY 2018

Timings

  • 8.30am Breakfast & networking
  • 9.00am Seminar starts
  • 10.00am Q&A

What is it? As its name would suggest, the EU General Data Protection Regulation is the new European law on data protection and privacy. This will replace the current national data protection laws throughout the EU so that the rules are the same throughout the region. For the UK, this means some significant additional obligations, as compared to our existing law.

Why do I need it? Every business that markets its products and services within the EU will be affected by the GDPR in some way. There are a number of key changes from the current legal framework, and it has teeth! The level of fines that will be able to be levied for breaches of the regulation could be as high as €20 million, or 4% of a business’s global annual turnover.

What will the session cover? The session will go through the key changes between the current law in England and Wales, and the new requirements under the GDPR. Our team will then provide a list of practical steps that each business can take to enable them to decide how best to comply, and will be able to answer some questions at the end of the session.

Who should attend? This seminar is aimed at those who will need to decide on the business’s data protection policy. Business owners, directors, senior managers, compliance officers, and anyone who makes decisions about the use of personal information within their business (e.g. head of HR, head of sales, marketing manager) will benefit. More general staff data protection training can be provided separately, once the policy is in place. Please note places are limited and we

Who will be speaking?

Alison Berryman heads up the IT & commercial team. She joined Waterfront in 2004 and has since acquired a very broad variety of commercial contracts experience having worked for clients of every size and from many and varied industries. Her particular area of expertise is in drafting and negotiating the agreements typically required by technology companies and their customers. A significant proportion of her clients are technology vendors working in the financial services, health and retail sectors.

Alison is Waterfront’s resident privacy and data protection expert, having worked in this field in both her previous role at Macrovision (a NASDAQ listed Silicon Valley tech company, now called “Rovi”) back in 2003 and throughout her 13 years at Waterfront. The vast majority of Alison’s data protection and privacy experience has been gained through advising technology companies, and she has therefore also acquired a good working knowledge of current common data security threats and practices. Alison has supervised teams carrying out data protection audits and provides workshops for clients and other training on this complex area, most recently having given a presentation on preparing for the GDPR at INTA’s Digital World Conference in Brussels in December 2016.

Other speakers will include Annika Chauhan a trainee solicitor who has works within our IT & commercial team. Other speakers TBA.
