Description

Imagining a More Equal Pulpit: Gender Inclusivity and Asian American and Latino/a Churches

The Sunday morning pulpit is overwhelmingly male. Despite several waves of feminism and the recent rise of postcolonial and eco-feminist discourse in academia, Asian American and Latino/a churches remain largely patriarchal in structure and theological orientation.

When women are hired, they are still generally paid less than their male counterparts. This effectively silences women, despite their being a numerical majority in the church. The male pulpit also contributes to the loss of congregational vitality as Christians who desire gender equity, especially younger women and men, exit the church due to its perceived irrelevance.

Women of Color Church Planters

This third Gender Summit is focused on Women of Color Church Planters. Gathering API and Latino/a faith leaders from the church and the academy, we will explore the ways that promoting and supporing women of color in church planting can lead to a more equal pulpit and sustain healthy church communities.

Ultimately, by investigating this phenomenon more fully, we aim to transform our churches into a fuller expression of the body of Christ. This can only be possible with a broad ecumenical effort. Therefore, we have assembled a mixed-gender team that draws from the academy, the pulpit, and Asian American and Latino/a church communities.

Who should attend?

  • Church planting officers of denominations
  • Women of Color Church Planters
  • Male Co-conspirators in promoting gender equality and gender equity

Background

A three-year Louisville Institute grant was awarded to ISAAC in 2017, toward the goal of “Imagining A More Equal Pulpit” and mitigating male-dominated pulpits in API and Latino/a churches. This Gender Summit is one of the steps that ISAAC is taking to fulfill this goal.

Finances/Scholarships

Summit registration is $90, which is subsidized with grant monies from the Louisville Institute, PAACCE, and other sponsors.

Students and commuters are offered a further reduced registration fee of $30 (Proof of student status will be required to complete your registration.)

Prospective attendees for whom this registration fee will be a burden are encouraged to email info@isaacweb.org for further information on potential scholarships.
