About this Event

Imagining a More Equal Pulpit: Gender Inclusivity and Asian American and Latino/a Churches

The Sunday morning pulpit is overwhelmingly male. Despite several waves of feminism and the recent rise of postcolonial and eco-feminist discourse in academia, Asian American and Latino/a churches remain largely patriarchal in structure and theological orientation. Women are often silenced, despite them being a numerical majority in the church.

Women of Color Church Planters

This third Gender Summit is focused on Women of Color Church Planters. Gathering API and Latino/a faith leaders from the church and the academy, we will explore ways to promote and support women of color in church planting. Supporting them can lead to a more equal pulpit and sustain healthy church communities.

We aim to transform our churches into a fuller expression of the body of Christ. This can only be possible with a broad ecumenical effort. We have assembled a mixed-gender team that draws from the academy, the pulpit, and Asian American and Latino/a church communities.

Who should attend?

  • Church planting officers of denominations
  • Women of Color Church Planters
  • Male allies in promoting gender equality and gender equity

Why register in advance?

Only registrants will be able to participate in the Q&A sessions, breakout rooms on days 2 & 3, and will receive opportunities to join us in future gatherings.

A three-year Louisville Institute grant was awarded to ISAAC in 2017, toward the goal of “Imagining A More Equal Pulpit” and mitigating male-dominated pulpits in API and Latino/a churches. This Gender Summit is one of the steps that ISAAC is taking to fulfill this goal.
