Event description

Description

Join Dartmoor's Daughter and Dartmoor Skies to watch the Geminid meteor shower, one of the most spectacular of the year and peaking on this evening with up to 120 meteors per hour. Unlike most other showers, the Geminids are associated with an asteroid rather than a comet - the 3200 Phaethon asteroid takes about 1.4 years to orbit around the Sun. The shower owes its name to the constellation Gemini from where the meteors seem to emerge from in the sky. There will also be talks and telescopes set up to view other astronomical delights.

Dartmoor Skies is a charity that aims to inspire people about astronomy and science. 50% of the event profits go towards their funding and equipment - http://dartmoorskies.org

WET WEATHER/CLOUDY SKIES PLAN: If the weather isn’t favourable, we will have a back up plan of tea, talks with slides, and a quiz in the nearby village hall. Please check your emails (including junk folders) on the morning of the event to know where to meet.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: Sturdy walking boots; plenty of warm layers and thermals (blankets & even a sleeping bag can be handy for warmth!); snacks, hot flask/drink, waterproof jacket & trousers, (head)torches with red film covers or rear bicycle lamps

MEETING PLACE: Location TBD

LEVEL: 1 out of 3

PRICE: £12 per adult. £5 under 16. Family discount 10% for 2 adults with 2 children.

(Please note that you are free to watch the meteor shower wherever there is public access on the moor.
