Event description

Description

In light of the discussion generated from Artist-in-Residence, Iris Eichenberg’s keynote at the Cooper Hewitt about trends, we would like to welcome you to Cranbrook’s campus on Friday, January 26th in the DeSalle Auditorium for a series of conversations that we are calling Gem Talks. The day’s program includes presentations by alum about their practice followed by a panel discussion led by Art Writer and Spring 2018 Critical Studies Fellow, John Corso Esquivel.

The talks are focused from the lens of these particular themes and subject matters which reoccur within the field of jewelry, how they align within the practices of the speakers, and how they are shaping the contemporary discourse.

The following panel discussion aims to elicit a conversation about the uniqueness within craft and it's history. That craft is an especially good platform to address memory, intimacy, labor, and utility simultaneously, and how these concepts operate in other fields.

The speakers are:

Kristine Bolhuis, Aaron Decker, Rebekah Frank, Julia Heineccius, Kathleen Janvier, Yuni Kim Lang, Tiff Massey, Tim McMahon, Edgar Mosa & Joe McShea , Jane Ritchie, Adam Shirley, Amy Weiks

Thus, we are honored to welcome all of you for a day of focused inquiry into the relevance of what we make.

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day. There will also be an alumni exhibition opening that evening.
