Alabama Folklife's workshop and cultural tour will provide a great day of instruction, fellowship, and fun-filled cultural heritage experiences. In the morning, from 9:00 a.m.- Noon: Pot holder workshop at the Terminal Station and Visitor's Center, Boykin. Instructors will be the family business, That's Sew Gee's Bend to include: Claudia Pettway Charley, Tinnie Pettway, and Minnie Pettway. For $10.00, you can stay to enjoy a catered lunch with mixed cold sandwhichs, condiments, side dishes, and refreshments. The caterer is local resident and business owner of Aunt Ruby's Kitchen from nearby Alberta, located at the northern gateway to Gee's Bend. While you enjoy your meal, author, poet, and quilt maker Tinnie Pettway will provide stories and answer questions. The first stop on the afternoon cultural tour will be the Bennett homestead where master artist, Marlene Bennett Jones will have a display of her quilts and be present to discuss her work and heritage. Joining her will be our friend Mary Margaret Pettway, who will contribute to a question and answer session. Stop #2 will be the Gee's Bend Collective managed by the great Mary Ann Pettway and we hope that China Pettway and Nancy Pettway or others will be there as well. Afterward, we will travel onward to the downtown area where there are further photo and shopping opportunities including the community store managed at one time by Tinnie Pettway.
