Geeks In The Peaks - Spring 2012
Friday, June 1, 2012 at 4:00 PM - Monday, June 4, 2012 at 4:00 PM (BST)
Bakewell, United Kingdom
Geeks In The Peaks is a low-tech gathering of technology, mapping, outdoor, space, gaming and other assorted geeks in the fabulous Peak District. This year we're hijacking Jubilee Weekend - which gives us an extra day to play with.
The emphasis is enjoying and appreciating the Great Outdoors, getting natural UV rather than the kind generated from your computer monitor. There's no set schedule or prescribed activities. Treat it like a barcamp, with the emphasis on the camp.
Having said that ... in the past campers have come up with all sorts of cool and geeky stuff to get stuck in to - rocket building, archaelogical walks, bush tucker challenges, kite-flying, bow and arrow making, geocaching and more ...
Anyone can suggest or organise geeky activities for the weekend: talks and sessions to hold al fresco, on a ramble, in one of the larger tents or even around the campfire into the early hours. (Don't be surprised though if the campfire turns into a hub for sharing ghost stories by the end of the night.)
There's no obligation to stick in a single group, and plenty of scope to branch out on your own or just take a relaxing break in great company.
What to bring
You will need to bring your own camping gear and should stock up on your own rations/beer/water for cooking/cleaning the rest of the time. Don't spend a fortune though - there's lots of scope for pooling resources.
There is drinking water, a pots-washroom and showers on site, but don't count on electricity - we advise you to keep it low-tech, no-tech or green-tech. A head torch, antiseptic handwash, baby wipes and flip-flops for the shower are always recommended.
If you'd like to run an activity, talk or session (or would love someone to share their skills), want to muck in with a car or equipment share, sort out some communal eating or maybe prepare a project to unleash on camp, let people know in the Geeks In The Peaks forum at The GIST Hub.
There'll be occasional updates and twitterings via @geeksinthepeaks on Twitter too.
