Event description

Description

Calling all home baristas and coffee geeks! Join us and our friends at Blue Bottle Coffee for a unique three hour hands-on coffee coaching experience normally reserved for professional baristas.

We'll Geek Out on:

  • deepening your understanding of the complex process of tasting coffee using the Coffee Taster's Flavor Wheel; exploring flavor, aroma and texture
  • sampling a variety of roasts, from single origins to blends; discussing use cases for different roasts and varieties
  • learning and perfecting fundamental skills using manual brewing methods and tools to make a consistently good cup of coffee
  • a conversation with the founder, James Freeman, sharing the Blue Bottle story and discussing the importance of the craft food movement

Blue Bottle training masters, Mallory Leicht and Pele Aveau will give an overview of coffee history before providing plenty of hands-on practice and feedback, guiding you through the process of making a perfect cup of coffee. Blue Bottle Founder James Freeman will join us to chat about his big coffee plans. We'll be one of the first visitors to Blue Bottle's recently launched brew-lab, designed for professional barista training.

You'll walk away from this interactive session inspired by your new knowledge of coffee and confident in your pour over technique. Each participant also receives a coffee toolkit to test out your new barista skills at home.

All proceeds from Geek Out events will support FCI’s educational scholarships for low-income food makers. Since 2011 FCI has helped over 100 small food businesses launch or grow, with over 65% of students being women or minorities and 50% receiving financial aid.

James Freeman is founder and roaster-in-chief of Blue Bottle Coffee, headquartered in Oakland, CA. Waiting is part of the Blue Bottle experience: Freeman believes coffee gets stale within minutes of brewing, so every cup that Blue Bottle serves is individually brewed. His cafes and kiosks generally use beans roasted no more than 10 days earlier. Well-known chefs such as Gramercy Tavern’s Michael Anthony and Coi’s Daniel Patterson serve Blue Bottle at their restaurants.

Mallory Leicht began in the specialty coffee industry with Midwest roaster and coffee bar, The Coffee Ethic. She is a US Barista Competition Head Judge and serves on the SCA Barista Competitions Committee. She holds Instructor Development Program certification through the Specialty Coffee Association and is member of the Barista Guild of America, with Level 1 certification. Now Mallory works with Blue Bottle as a Coffee & Retail Trainer and she is an active member of the Bay Area Coffee Community as the Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator.

Pele Aveau has been part of the coffee industry for 15 years, after starting as a barista in Santa Rosa while attending culinary school. He nows serves as the Regional Training Manager at Blue Bottle and enjoys teaching others how to taste coffee thoughtfully.

For the first time, The Food Craft Institute (FCI) is opening its doors to the public for its new Geek Out tasting series covering coffee, charcuterie, beer and more. Working with our wide network of Bay Area’s founders, masters and makers, we’re inviting dedicated food fans to geek out on the styles, science, techniques and tools of your favorite foods - giving you access normally reserved for industry pros. Whether you’re a casual foodie or a serious aficionado you’ll walk away with mad new skills and knowledge.
