Learn Sweetgrass Basket Making with Geechee Language & Culture

About this Event

Welcome our newest guest instructor Jennifaye Singleton - Geechee Sweetgrass baskets...

How l hunna fa doing? I'm Jennifaye Singleton, a fifth-generation Sweetgrass basket weaver located in historic Charleston, SC. Through my basket weaving, I preserve a dying art that was founded by the slaves that were bought and sold to Charleston plantations to cultivate rice and other crops. My baskets and jewelry are woven from sustainably sourced, hand picked sweetgrass, pine needles, bullrush, and palmetto fronds. Pluff Mud Mercantile is now carrying my sweetgrass baskets for you to purchase, in addition, we have partnered to offer you classes in sweetgrass basket making and culture. With a passion for preserving this dying art, we share the skills with you and the history of the geechee culture and language. We offer many shapes, sizes, and designs in the store. We also offer custom orders and one of a kind options upon request. So let us know what you are thinking and we will make it.

Sweetgrass baskets are a work of art, a collectible item to be passed down for generations and make great meaningful gifts for life events such as weddings, anniversarys, housewarming and the like. You are investing in a person, an art, and a part of our lowcountry history when purchasing a sweetgrass basket.

What does the class include? All materials and 2.5 hours of instruction. By the end of the class you will have all of the basic skills of sweetgrass basket weaving. Based on your pace you may have completed a small handle sweetgrass basket or be well on your way to completing the basket and starting your sweetgrass making journey.

Jennifaye will teach the process, share the gullah geechee culture and language along with the history of sweetgrass basket making. All of the materials and tools will be explained in the making process.

Admission to the class is $85 per person. We will provide water and light snacks. You are welcome to bring a non-alcoholic beverage of your choice or snacks.

We look forward to connecting, relaxing, and making with you all in this community building event.
