About this event
Join us for our 27th Annual Golf Fundraiser at Montgomery Country Club in Laytonsville, Maryland. We are so pleased to be able to hold our tournament again after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. Proceeds will benefit The George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy Saturday School. In 2019 we raised nearly $45,000 through the support of sponsors, golfers, and friends. This year, our ambitious goal is to raise $60,000!
There are a lot of exciting activities going on at The Learning Academy. Each year more than 2,500 students receive instruction in reading, language arts and math. Even during the pandemic, we served over 1,500 students virtually from 2020-2022. Now that we are looking forward to returning to in-person learning in the fall, our students have the option to work one-on-one with talented peer tutors on advanced topics, study with university students to prepare for the Advanced Placement Biology and Physics exams, receive specialized instruction in Coding and STEM, and prepare for the SAT or ACT tests. Each Saturday in the fall, our students and their siblings will receive breakfast and attend a motivational session to boost their self-confidence. Parents attend workshops to help them become effective advocates for their children and some parents attend English language instruction classes at Saturday School.
Providing this array of critical services comes at a cost. The Learning Academy must raise about $350,000 a year from grants and donations to stay in operation. That’s difficult to do because we compete for finite philanthropic contributions among dozens of worthy small regional nonprofits. That’s why your contribution is so important. We value your consideration and hope that you will review the sponsorship opportunities enclosed and support Saturday School with a donation or sponsorship. Every dollar raised helps our students move closer to graduation and a bright, shining future.
In the fall, we invite you to visit a Saturday School center to see how your support affects the lives of children. In the meantime, we’re doing our best to stay connected – please visit our website at www.saturdayschool.org, and follow us on Facebook or on Twitter @GBTLASatSch and Instagram at saturdayschooltutoring. Feel free to contact Juanita King, Office Manager, at (301)287-8980 with any questions or to find out how you can be involved in Saturday School.
