Description

Join us for an evening with Caldecott Award, winning author/illustrator Javaka Steptoe and Clark County's Poet Luareate Vogue Robinson at the annual Gayle A. Zeiter Children's & Young Adult Literature Conference.

The Gayle A. Zeiter Literacy Development Center, Southern Nevada Writing Project and the Lied Library are pleased to host this years Gayle A. Zeiter Conference. The mission of the Zeiter conference is to engage teachers, librarians, budding authors and illustrators, university faculty and students of all ages, in an evening of exploration and engagement with renowned Children's and Young Adult authors.

This years conference features a keynote by Javaka Steptoe titled The Value of Imperfect Heroes. Javaka's presentation will focus on the richness of life lessons to be learned in exploring the imperfect heroes and why they can be presented as role models for our students.

As a special edition to the conference this year, Clark County's Poet Laureate Vogue Robinson will share some of her incredible poetry.

Break out sessions and round tables will provide opportunities to learn ways to share and teach with children’s and young adult literature; explore diverse topics in literature; and learn more about fostering writing in the classroom.

We look forward to a wonderful evening at this years Gayle A. Zeiter Children's and Young Adult Literature Conference.

Tickets are limited! Be sure to register TODAY!

Javaka Steptoe

Before becoming an award-winning artist, Javaka Steptoe served as a model and was the inspiration behind much of the artwork created by his esteemed father, the late John Steptoe.

Javaka Steptoe’s debut picture book, In Daddy’s Arms I Am Tall: African Americans Celebrating Fathers (Lee & Low Books, ), earned him a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, in addition to a nomination for Outstanding Children’s Literature Work at the 1998 NAACP Image Awards. Since that time, Steptoe has illustrated and/or written more than a dozen books for youth readers, collaborating with some of the top names in the business—Walter Dean Myers, Nikki Grimes, Karen English. This past January, Steptoe won the 2017 Caldecott Medal for his picture book biography Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat (Little, Brown), more than thirty years after his father won two Caldecott Honors. The book won many other honors, too, including the 2017 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, and multiple starred reviews. Visit http://www.javaka.com for further information.
