Event description

Description

Join us for a gathering and public conversation to mark the installation of new remembrance objects to The Gun Violence Memorial Project and to discuss the role of memorials in influencing our national narrative.

5:00-5:30pm
Gather in Randolph Square (1st Floor North) to mark the installation of additional remembrance objects in The Gun Violence Memorial Project at the Chicago Cultural Center.

5:30pm-6:30pm
Following the unveiling, a panel talk and short performance will be hosted in the Claudia Cassidy Theater (2nd Floor North).

The performance of “A Song for Terrell” written by Trevon Bosley in memory of his brother, Terrell Bosley, will be performed by Takesha Meshé Kizart-Thomas and musicians of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. The piece was created as part of Notes for Peace, a songwriting project produced by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Negaunee Music Institute, Purpose Over Pain, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Shifting the Narrative: What does it mean to design an inclusive memorial?

The panel discussion will consider how a memorial can support the movement to end gun violence. Moderated by Jha D Williams of MASS Design Group, panelists include: Kim Smith, Crime Lab; Arne Duncan, Chicago CRED; Patricia Padauy-Oliver, Change the Ref; Michael Murphy, MASS Design Group; Annette Nance-Holt, Purpose Over Pain.

The panel will be followed by a reception in the Welcome Center (1st Floor North) from 6:30-7:00pm.

This event is presented in partnership with the non-profit architecture and design collective MASS Design Group. Commissioned by the 2019 Chicago Architecture Biennial, The Gun Violence Memorial Project honors the lives and stories of victims of gun violence. Remembrance objects reside in a collection of glass houses, representing the magnitude of gun-related deaths that occur over a single month in the United States.
