Event description

Description

On Saturday, September 16 (rain date September 30), Indiana Landmarks leads a three-hour bike tour of historic Garfield Park and the surrounding neighborhood on Indianapolis’s south side. For those not inclined to ride, we also offer a walking tour of the area on Thursday, September 14 .

The neighborhood suffered in the construction of I-65 in the mid-1970s but is enjoying a resurgence, with homebuyers drawn by the park and its refurbished historic features and the vintage brick and frame bungalows, Four Squares and Tudor-revival-style houses.

Bike tour participants will stop to visit Vickie Goins’s historic brick bungalow with a red tile roof at 902 East Garfield Drive. Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker, winner of the first motorcycle race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909 and a competitor in the 1922 Indy 500, built the house in 1925 and lived here until his death in 1960. As a motorcycle racer, he set transcontinental distance and speed records and won entry to the Motorsports Hall of Fame and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. The house sits facing the park at the elbow where South Garfield Drive bends to become East Garfield Drive.

The bike tour also will stop at the 1865 home of Page and Russ Clemens at 869 Southern Avenue, an ongoing restoration project. The couple turned a hillside into a perennial garden and installed a brick patio with a firepit in the back yard, where they added a raised-bed garden, bee hives, and a chicken coop with six happy hens. They love the how the home’s wrapping porches and balcony reinforce the connection to nature. The house, at the corner of East Southern and Allen avenues, faces the south side of Garfield Park.

Refund requests must be received seven days in advance of tour date. Tours will be offered rain or shine. In the event of lightning, the tour date will be rescheduled to Saturday, September 30. Indiana Landmarks will contact tour guests in the event of tour cancellation.
