Grow your photography skills while supporting the education mission of the Arboretum - an evening in the garden with Michael and Iris.

Workshop description:

Join prize-winning, local photographers Michael Penn and Iris Korhonen-Penn for an evening of instruction, refreshments, and scenic vignettes in a beautiful garden setting.

This is a digital garden photography workshop led by local photographers Michael Penn and Iris Korhonen-Penn. The course is designed for those who wish to advance their basic photographic skills in a garden setting, creating images that are imaginative, distinctive, and visually exciting. Over three hours, the instructors will lead participants through the Arboretum and discuss technical and visual aspects of making such images. Both artistic and storytelling approaches will be covered. In addition to hands-on guidance and feedback during the workshop, participants qualify for individual critique on their images after the workshop.

This is an adult-only event; please see the 2019 Arboretum Schedule of Events for Children's Program offerings.

Workshop Date: Sunday, July 7; 6:00pm - 9:00pm; (Rain Date: Sunday, August 4 with the same schedule); workshop begins promptly at 6pm

About the instructors:

Michael Penn has been a working photojournalist for the last 35 years. He has worked with the Juneau Empire since 1995; he has also worked for Fresno Bee, Anchorage Daily News (ADN), Modesto Bee, and Philadelphia Inquirer. In 1988, Michael was part of an ADN team that received a Pulitzer Prize for community service for a special project “People in Peril” documenting alcoholism and suicide among Native Peoples in Alaska. He has received numerous awards for his photography.

Iris Korhonen-Penn is a fine art photographer, whose work range from classic landscapes to plants and abstract forms. She works mostly in black and white. In 2000, she co-founded Alaska Photographic Arts Association, a Juneau-based organization that promoted creative photography in the state for over 10 years. Her work has been part of multiple exhibits, including a solo exhibit in Helsinki, Finland, and various juried and non-juried group exhibits. Iris’ most recent work has been made almost exclusively using the iPhone.
