Event description

Description

Wall to Wall Chamber and the SLC Chamber Choir perform highlights from the student chamber ensembles. Instrumentalists include cello, harp, flute, violin, piano performing Bach, Beethoven, Massenet, Harrison. The select choir performs Scarlatti, Poulenc, Dickau, and Stopford.

African Classics is a performance ensemble focused on a wide range of musical styles that emerged in the second half of the 20th century in various regions of Africa. During this time, many African countries experienced a revitalization in musical creativity largely due to sweeping changes in post-colonial social and political climates. The student ensemble will perform songs from prominent artists and groups from this era.

Gamelan Ensemble is a bronze orchestra that includes four-toned metallophones, gongs, drums, and flutes. Rhythmic patterns played upon the instruments interlock and combine to form large structures of great complexity and beauty. Our gamelan angklung was specially handcrafted in Bali for the College and was named Chandra Buana, or “Moon Earth,” at its dedication on April 16, 2000 in Reisinger Concert Hall. Our student ensemble will be joined by guest dancers and musicians and will perform three compositions, each with unique social and cultural functions.

The Jazz Department concludes their season with vocalists, instrumentalists, and the Blues groups under the direction of Glenn Alexander and Bill Moring.
