Description

As part of The Vanport Mosaic Festival May 21-June 5

Gambatte: An American Legacy

Directed by Chisao Hata

Saturday June 1st at 3pm and 7 pm, Sunday, June 2nd at 3pm
Tuesday June 4th and Wednesday June 5th at 7pm

Through theatre, dance, music and historical documentation, this 90-minute performance evolved from an original reading performed in 2017 at the Vanport Mosaic Festival. This current collaboration brings together the talents of four artists Chisao Hata, Heath Hyun, Ken Yoshikawa and Jenna Yokoyama. Each has explored what it means to be Asian American in today’s landscape, and the historical impact and complexities on forming identities in America.

The Japanese American story is misunderstood. This performance is a way to spark empathy and heal the traumatic effects of racism in America.

Adults $15, Children/Seniors $10

**Also join us for our COMMUNITY HEALING GATHERING**

MONDAY, JUNE 3RD, 2019 7PM
Facilitated by Chisao Hata

Limited Seating- RESERVATIONS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED

This event focuses on sharing and listening to the emotional legacies held within the Japanese American experience. Generations have been impacted by the history of racism through lived experiences, historic impacts and the individual and collective pursuit of understanding identities in America.
This is an opportunity to hold space with each other to share our stories of joy and struggle and celebrate our resilience to survive. This is an opportunity for healing and reveling in our contemporary lives, generational impacts and ancestral ways of knowing and becoming.

Sponsors include: The Regional Arts and Culture Council, The Japanese American Citizens League - Portland Chapter, Ronni Lacroute, Oregon Nikkei Endowment, World Arts Foundation
