About the Exhibition

Image Gardeners (January 14 – April 30, 2022) assembles portrait photography from the McEvoy Family Collection alongside three new artistic projects to feature a community of women and non-binary artists nurturing alternative aesthetics of portraiture. The exhibition includes modern and contemporary portrait photography spanning eight decades, highlighting an intergenerational dialogue among artworks to reveal varied perspectives on gender, race, power, intimacy, and photographic portraiture. Barrier-breaking creative practices and singular examples of modern photography mingle to nurture new visions of the self at a pivotal moment in our collective understanding of how identities are assigned, communicated, and understood.

In the Screening Room, Gina Basso guest curates seen only, heard only through someone else's description, a two-part program of experimental short films by women and non-binary artists from the 1970s through the 2010s that consider how images and narratives construct meaning, artifice, and memory.

Image Gardeners is accompanied by a film screening, panel, and live performance by and about a diverse group of guest artists, curators, and scholars. Learn more at

Organizer of Gallery Reservations: 'Image Gardeners' at McEvoy Arts

McEvoy Foundation for the Arts presents exhibitions and events that engage, expand, and challenge themes present in the McEvoy Family Collection. Established in 2017, McEvoy Arts creates an open, intimate, and welcoming place for private contemplation and public discussion about art and culture. Rooted in the creative legacies of the San Francisco Bay Area, McEvoy Arts embodies a far-reaching vision of the McEvoy Family Collection’s potential to facilitate and engage conversations on the practice of contemporary art. McEvoy Arts invites artists, curators, and thinkers with varied perspectives to respond to the Collection. Each year, these collaborations produce exhibitions in the Foundation’s gallery, new media programs in the Screening Room, as well as many film, music, literary, and performing arts events each year. Exhibitions are free and open to the public.
