Introducing our 2017 Honoree: Michaela Angela Davis!
Michaela Angela Davis is relentless in her work as image activist, writer, conversationalist, editorial director, feminist, and community servant. Ms. Davis expands narratives about beauty, image, and power and advances images of people of color at major media outlets.
A mentor to many young women of color, Ms. Davis volunteers with Black Girls Rock! and Imagenation organizations, and now Brooklyn Free School.
NAACP of New York honored Ms. Davis with the Phenomenal Woman Award at their centennial celebration. She has earned distinction as a “Trailblazer” by the City of New York and “Woman of Power” by the Feminist Press.
We are excited to honor her with Brooklyn Free School’s Community Voice Award.
Note from our Gala Co-Chairs:
We are thrilled to announce our 9th annual Gala! This year’s Gala theme, “Free Words, Free Minds,” will celebrate the outstanding leadership and quality of expression that the school fosters in all its students.
BFS is a non-profit, independent school founded in 2004 that welcomes over 80 students to learn and study based on a foundation of democratic decision making and social justice values. Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn’s historic Clinton Hill neighborhood, the school has a unique academic program that builds students’ capacity for leadership, empathy, and complex problem solving. Students emerge with a deep understanding of self and a passion for learning.
Please join us for Gala 2017! Proceeds from the Gala support BFS’s unique sliding-scale tuition program, allowing over 90% of our students to receive subsidized access to our day school program. We look forward to a fantastic evening!
