About this Event

Gaining Grip 2 is an event whose main aim is to appreciate and celebrate the women from all walks of life. It wishes to tell diverse stories of the journey from different girls who’ve grown into the acceptance of being woman. It seeks to highlight the struggles and the wins in the process of self discovery, self- realization and self-acceptance.

The event is a continuation of the Gaining Grip experience launched last year by Spontaneous, a Kenyan based floet focusing on both poetry and music in her performances. It shall be in partnership with Nomonde Sky from Tembisa in South Africa; born and bred poet equally passionate about Gender and development.

The showcase shall entail amazing acts from our own homeland as well. The youngest member of the cast Esther Wenyeji a singer, rapper and poet whose 10 years old, flawless floet fusing both poetry and music IamSocratess, multi-talented Shikkiey the rapper, singer, poet, dancer and Dj. Melody worth your ears from the musician and violinist Vanessa Pym and the voice range wrecker Dinah. All being exceptionally passionate about the topic on gender and development.

The event has been inspired by quite a number of things, first, the gender disparity in the arts which is quite evident with most shows having male headliners. The showcase shall bring together diverse women in the art scene as headliners. The content shared shall seek to empower women individuality and free thinking. We hope that this shall also spur conversations and influence positive inclusivity of women in performing arts.

Secondly, the desire to tell stories behind the female gender inner struggles on self-acceptance in a patriarchal setting, influenced by both the internal and external factors. Through the content we hope to create a safe space where men are able to feet into these shoes, relate and feel motivated to be part of a solution.

Lastly, the longing to address a common problem in relations leading to the alarming rate of femicide faced in both countries. We hope to probe discussions on deep sited issues in relations between the male and the female gender. We hope to achieve these through various performances encompassing of spoken word poetry, storytelling and music.
